Land rehabilitation and reforestation in tropical island regions depend on growing media that are inexpensive, locally accessible, and compatible with existing nursery practices. Coconut coir and sago waste are abundant in North Maluku, yet their statistical evaluation as nursery media for local tree seedlings remains scarce. This study examined the effect of growing medium (soil, coconut coir + soil, sago waste + soil) on the height and leaf-number growth of nutmeg, duku, and rambutan seedlings over three weeks at Campus IV, Universitas Khairun, West Halmahera, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three species, three media, and five replications (n = 45 polybag units), analyzed by two-factor ANOVA using Microsoft Excel (Data Analysis ToolPak). The week factor significantly affected seedling height in all species (nutmeg F=19.87 p=0.008; duku F=58.35 p=0.001; rambutan F=298.94 p<0.001), whereas growing medium had no statistically significant effect (nutmeg F=1.00 p=0.444; duku F=3.80 p=0.119; rambutan F=3.90 p=0.115), even though coconut coir + soil numerically produced the tallest seedlings across species. Leaf-number patterns varied among species without a consistent medium effect. These findings indicate a species- and phase-specific growth response, suggesting both wastes can reasonably substitute part of the soil without compromising early performance, supporting SDG 12 and SDG 15 through local agro-waste valorization.
