Authorship Criteria and Contributorship Policy

Journal of Engineering Environtmental Energy and Science (JOE3S) is committed to ensuring that authorship accurately reflects the intellectual contributions and responsibilities of individuals involved in scholarly research.

Authorship must be based on substantial academic contributions, active participation in manuscript preparation, final approval, and accountability for the published work.

Authorship Criteria

An individual qualifies as an author only if they meet all four of the following criteria:

  1. Substantial Contribution: Make a substantial contribution to the conception or design of the research, data acquisition, analysis or interpretation, methodology development, or software creation used in the research.
  2. Writing and Critical Review: Participate in drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content.
  3. Final Approval: Approve the final version of the manuscript submitted to the journal and any subsequent version requiring their approval.
  4. Accountability: Agree to be accountable for their own contributions and help ensure that questions concerning the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All individuals designated as authors must satisfy all four criteria.

At least one author should take overall responsibility for coordinating the integrity of the research and ensuring that the work is reported accurately and transparently.

Author Contributions (CRediT Taxonomy)

JOE3S encourages authors to provide an Author Contributions Statement using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT).

The following contribution categories may be used:

  • Conceptualization
  • Methodology
  • Software
  • Validation
  • Formal Analysis
  • Investigation
  • Resources
  • Data Curation
  • Writing – Original Draft
  • Writing – Review & Editing
  • Visualization
  • Supervision
  • Project Administration
  • Funding Acquisition

Authors should indicate only the roles that accurately reflect their actual contributions.

Example:

A.B.: Conceptualization, Methodology, Writing – Original Draft; C.D.: Investigation, Data Curation, Formal Analysis, Visualization; E.F.: Supervision, Funding Acquisition, Writing – Review & Editing.

All authors must approve the final manuscript and agree to be accountable for their respective contributions.

Contributions That Do Not Qualify for Authorship

The following activities alone do not justify authorship:

  • General supervision or administrative management.
  • Funding acquisition without substantial intellectual contribution.
  • Data collection or technical assistance alone.
  • Language editing, proofreading, formatting, or translation.
  • Provision of equipment or materials without intellectual involvement.
  • General advice without substantial research or scholarly contribution.

Individuals whose contributions do not meet the authorship criteria should be appropriately acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section.

Responsibilities of the Corresponding Author

The corresponding author is responsible for communication between the authors and the editorial team.

The corresponding author must ensure that:

  1. All individuals meeting the authorship criteria are included in the author list.
  2. All authors have approved the manuscript and its submission to JOE3S.
  3. The order of authors accurately reflects their agreed contributions.
  4. All required declarations regarding funding, competing interests, research ethics, data availability, and AI use are complete.
  5. Relevant permissions for third-party materials have been obtained.
  6. All authors are informed of editorial decisions and significant correspondence.
  7. Post-publication questions concerning the manuscript are addressed appropriately.

Equal Contribution and Group Authorship

JOE3S permits equal contributions among authors when two or more authors have contributed equally to the work.

Example:

"A.B. and C.D. contributed equally to this work."

Group or consortium authorship is also permitted, provided that the individuals meeting the authorship criteria and their respective contributions are clearly identified.

Generative AI and Professional Assistance

Generative AI tools, including large language models and AI-assisted writing applications, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

Authors may use AI tools for language improvement, grammar checking, translation assistance, formatting, or other appropriate research-support activities.

When generative AI tools are used to produce or substantially modify manuscript content, authors must disclose the use of the tools, including their names and purposes, in the relevant declaration section.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, validity, and integrity of all manuscript content, including AI-assisted content.

AI tools must not be used to fabricate or falsify research data, generate misleading evidence, or conceal plagiarism or other research misconduct.

Professional writers, editors, or translators who contribute to manuscript preparation must be acknowledged appropriately when their contributions do not meet the authorship criteria.

Changes to Authorship

Any addition, removal, or change in the order of authors must be justified and approved by all affected authors.

Before acceptance, requests for authorship changes must be submitted in writing by the corresponding author, accompanied by a clear explanation and written consent from all affected authors.

After acceptance or publication, authorship changes will be considered only in exceptional circumstances. Approved changes will be documented through an appropriate correction notice.

Author Names, Affiliations, and ORCID

Authors must provide accurate names, institutional affiliations, and email addresses during manuscript submission.

ORCID iDs are encouraged for all authors to support accurate identification, attribution, and research discoverability. Any ORCID requirement adopted by the journal must be applied consistently through its submission system and author guidelines.
