Interactive Musical Instrument Artwork: Exploring the Intersection of Waste Management and Cultural Tourism Space in Jathilan, Sumbo Village, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Abstrak

Introduction/Main Objectives: This research examines the development of alternative musical instruments for Jathilan in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, with a focus on plastic waste management and environmental sustainability. The scarcity of traditional kendang drums made from jackfruit wood poses a challenge to cultural preservation, making this topic highly relevant for sustainable cultural tourism. Background Problems: The key problem addressed is the declining availability of traditional materials for kendang production, which threatens the sustainability of Jathilan traditions. The research question is: How can recycled materials be utilized to create alternative musical instruments that preserve cultural heritage while promoting sustainability? Novelty: This study introduces an innovative approach by using recycled materials, such as PVC banners and HDPE plastics, to develop an alternative kendang prototype. While previous studies have explored sustainable instruments, none have focused on Jathilan kendang or integrated design thinking and waste management for cultural preservation. Research Methods: The research employs a design thinking approach and the black box method to conceptualize and produce a functional kendang prototype. Data collection includes material testing, sound quality evaluation, and collaborative feedback from local artisans and artists. Findings/Results: The prototype demonstrates aesthetic and functional innovations, maintaining the cultural value of Jathilan while incorporating sustainability. Conclusion: This research highlights the potential of recycled materials to replace traditional resources without compromising cultural authenticity. The findings underscore the importance of innovative collaborations in reducing waste and preserving heritage, promoting sustainable cultural tourism in Sumbo Village, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta.
